WHAT IS VISUAL STRESS SYNDROME?

Visual Stress occurs when specific images or types of visual stimuli trigger an overreaction in the brain. This leads to symptoms including physical and visual discomfort as well as perceptual difficulties.

Visual Stress happens when light sources, glare, high contrast materials, patterns, movement, flicker, or colours cause the visual parts of the brain to overreact. This reaction can lead to many signs and symptoms, such as nausea, headaches, fatigue, or sensitivity to light and patterns, as well as difficulties with reading, attention, behaviour, and sensory processing.

Many neurological conditions have symptoms that overlap with Visual Stress, making it difficult to distinguish the root cause. In many cases, Visual Stress co-exists with these neurological disorders or learning difficulties. Because visual triggers are often overlooked as a contributing factor, many individuals are not getting the symptom relief they could be receiving.

Several examples of conditions where Visual Stress is commonly seen include ADHD, dyslexia, migraine, post-concussion, whiplash and other traumatic brain injury, vestibular disorders, visual snow, Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and anxiety.

Individuals with symptoms of Visual Stress should consider a Visual Stress and Intuitive Colorimetry Assessment. What is Precision Colorimetry?

At Ottawa Valley Vision, we pride ourselves on offering cutting-edge vision care services, including the innovative precision Colorimetry Assessment. Precision Colorimetry is a specialized technique used to identify the optimal custom tint for individuals experiencing visual discomfort or reading difficulties secondary to Visual Stress Syndrome.

A Visual Stress and Colorimetry Assessment is a clinical method utilizing the Cerium Intuitive Colorimeter to identify the specific wavelengths of light that provide the most comfortable and accurate visual experience for an individual. This process helps to reduce eye strain, reduce light sensitivity, improve reading abilities, increase screen tolerance, and enhance overall visual comfort. Once the customized precision tint is selected through this clinical protocol, the patient can then select from a variety of different methods to integrate the tint and improve his quality of life. Some of these options include custom-tinted prescription lenses, fit-over glasses or custom clip-ons, or customized lighting solutions.

The Assessment Process

Transform your vision and experience the difference with a Visual Stress and Intuitive Colorimetry Assessment at Ottawa Valley Vision today. Book your appointment and take the first step towards seeing the world in a whole new light.

  • Step 1: Comprehensive Eye Examination

Before diving into the assessment, our team of professionals will conduct a thorough eye examination to rule out any underlying vision problems and determine the most accurate prescription for your lenses.

If you have recently had an eye examination with an Optometrist, let our team know at the time of booking and we can instead schedule you for a brief consultation regarding Colorimetry with one of our specialized Optometrists.

  • Step 2: Visual Stress and Colorimetry Test

A Visual Stress and Colorimetry test is a diagnostic procedure targeting visual discomfort, migraines, and dyslexia in individuals. It involves using color overlays and precision tinted lenses to reduce or eliminate visual stress.

  • Step 3: Personalized Lens Creation

Once we've identified the exact wavelengths of your ideal colour filter, our team will create custom lenses incorporating this specific tint. These lenses will help reduce discomfort from harsh lights or screens, improve tolerance to your visual triggers, improve the efficiency with which you can complete visual tasks, and improve your overall quality of life.
